My first visit to GPU
stadium (formerly known as Reading Municipal Memorial Stadium) can be
exemplified by an incident that occurred early in the ball game.
Shortly after the game had started the usher began to go up into our
section exclaiming that there were plenty of seats available either
closer to the field or under the shade. This occurred at the start
of the second inning, prompting me to believe that either 1) the
staff here are very friendly, or 2) the fans are so
serious about baseball here that if a seat is not filled by the
second inning, it won't be for the rest of the game. One visit to
this park, and I think you'll be convinced that both are probably
true.
This is a friendly
place. Sure, the staff is friendly (the usher was just one
example), but there's just something about this place. Mike Castro
said it best on his "Field
of Dreams" site when he said that the whole place "just
feels right." I really can't explain it any better than
that. The owners of this team have taken a beautiful old stadium
and simply made it better while not compromising any of the old
charm. And there's plenty of charm. The setting is in the
mountains of Eastern Pennsylvania, but as Reading is an industrial town,
the view includes factories and other buildings set against the
mountainous backdrop. The exterior of the park is comprised of a
charming brick facade. The concourse
underneath the stands is dark and cramped, providing a nostalgic feeling
ofthe old parks, but for those who are not so sentimental to find such a
thing enjoyable, there are other concession areas along the outfield
lines (and one in left field) that provide considerably more breathing
room. Parking is free and concessions are reasonably priced ($1 hot dogs
- now that's nostalgic, at least these days). And (ballpark
purists rejoice!) there are no luxury boxes to speak of, save for some
boxed out sections of seats in the outfield reserved for various
companies (see the one in the lower right of the picture below).
There are also some
modern amenities, including a picnic buffet for those willing to shell
out $14, several nice picnic areas, television monitors at the
concession stands so fans can keep an eye on the game, and a beautiful
video scoreboard. But again, these amenities compliment the
grand old park rather than dominating it.
I really can't say
anything bad about this place. It is definitely one of the best
places I have ever seen a baseball game.
2001 Update: The
newest addition to GPU Stadium has been the brand new swimming pool in
right field (see pictures below). Reserved for group use, the pool
consists of a small changing area, a two-tiered picnic table area (with
cable televisions on each table), a buffet deck, and, of course, a 1000
square feet, four feet deep heated pool, complete with
fountains.
