The
Stockton Ports, who were once known as the "Mudville Nine", have
since moved out of Billy Hebert Field and into a brand new facility in
downtown Stockton. While I can't say that this place was
spectacular, it's kind of sad to see the old places be replaced.
The old ballpark was very simple - just a basic
individual seat grand stand with bleachers running down each
line. Nothing particularly unique or exciting about
it.
I can only remember one feature of interest - the press
table (which seated exactly one newspaper guy) was actually set below the
press box and was easily accessible to fans. I ended up chatting
with the newspaper guy for a few innings.
The bottom line: Nothing
particularly exciting here, except to say that another old ballpark has
given way to a new, revenue driven baseball factory. Even
considering that depressing development, however, Billy Hebert Field was
slightly below average.
