Maybe it was because I had just come from
the mind-numbingly beautiful Yosemite National Park that day, but I didn't
find John Thurman Field to be all that exciting.
The ballpark staff was kind and
professional, the concessions somewhat original (though I expected more of
a Mexican/Southwest flair than what was there), and the park exceptionally
clean. But, the architectural style was somewhat unimaginative and
the stadium itself appeared cheaply constructed, as it consisted largely
of aluminum stands.
Overall, this was not a bad park to visit,
but one that I would not go out of my way to see again.
Incidentally, when I was there, the team
was named the Modesto Athletics, after what was then their parent club in
Oakland. Since becoming affiliated with the Colorado Rockies for the
2005 season, however, they have changed their name to the Modesto
Nuts.

I was there on Cinco De Mayo, and thus
got the opportunity to listen to this fine mariachi band.
