During the first four years of
existence, no other stadium saw more fans than Raley Field. Fans
flocked not only to the new ballpark, but to a successful team. The
River Cats won division titles in each of their first three years before
winning the entire Pacific Coast League championship in 2003.
The stadium itself is a
beauty, even if its not all that original. Highlights include the
view of the city, the sizable grass seating areas (for which they sell
general admission tickets at a very reasonable $5 a piece), and the
"see-through" bullpens. Also notable were a few special
items on the concessions menu: the apple chicken sausage was especially
good.
I have to admit, though, that
it's getting harder and harder to write about stadiums like these, because
even though they are done extremely well, they are all beginning to
resemble one another.
The Bottom Line: Raley
Field is an averagely above average stadium. It's done
very well, but it's just like so many others that it's hard to consider it
very far above the pack.
